Margaret Marie (Gugel) Jacobson was born to Edwin & Ella Gugel on November 26, 1915 in Menomonie, WI. She died, surrounded by family on December 4, 2011, at Dunn County Health Care Center in Menomonie.
She lived in the Menomonie area all of her long life of 96 years. She graduated from Menomonie High School in 1933. On November 11, 1934, she married Russel Jacobson in Black River Falls, WI. Margaret was raised and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Menomonie and after her marriage, was an active member at Little Elk Creek Church. Russel and Margaret farmed many years on the Jacobson family farm. Margaret was a great cook & baker. She cooked at Little Elk Creek School for several years. She also supplied many friends & family with her renowned Christmas baking.
More than 35 years of Margaret's life was involved with 4-H, either as project leader or general leader with the LEC 4-H club. She enjoyed working with all the members and their families.
Margaret & Russel loved traveling, going many Sunday's boat racing around Wisconsin and Minnesota. Then, there were trips to Hawaii, Alaska, California, Florida and Nan, Bernice and Margaret even flew to Europe to visit their international farm youth exchange student from Luxembourg. The family has kept in touch since 1953. The Jacobson's also had an I.F.Y.E student from Finland in 1957, named Marja.
Margaret & Russel also had many fishing trips with a special group of friends, and if that wasn't enough, Margaret took flying lessons and she did quite well.
After farming, Margaret, Russel and another couple planned, built and ran Lowes Creek Golf Course in Eau Claire.
Great-granddaughter Amanda Helke was her special home care provider before Margaret became a 5 year resident of Dunn County Health Care Center, where she always remarked on her excellent care and activities.
Margaret loved all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She always enjoyed hearing about their many activities. She was a special woman; she was caring, an independent thinker and always willing to teach and help everyone. She will be forever missed by her whole family and her many friends.
Margaret is survived by her 4 children; Bernice (Scotty) Sutliff of Menomonie,
Roberta (Leonard) Clark of Rice Lake, Jerome (Karen) Gugel of Elk Lake and Donna (Ray) Schmitz of Onsted, MI.
2 sisters-in-law; Betty (Lorny) Michelbook of Menomonie and Betty (Gerald) Gugel of Chugiak, AK.
11 grandchildren; Nan Larson, Barry Clark, Jenny Landes, Beth Phillips, David Gugel, Tess Gugel, Lorie Laporta, Mike Berndt, John Berndt, RJ Schmitz and Sara Schmitz.
15 great-grandchildren; Amanda and Ryan Helke, Laura Miller, Julianna Larson, Craig and Megan Landes, Jake, Michael and Sully Phillips, Chelsea, Santino, Louis and Pascale Laporta, Mackenzie and Eric Berndt.
She was preceded in death by her husband Russel, parents Edwin and Ella Gugel, 2 brothers Gerald and Marcus Gugel, a granddaughter Julie Von Secraw, and one great-grandson William Eckert.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday, December 8, 2011 at Little Elk Creek Lutheran Church, Twp. of Red Cedar, Dunn Co., with Pastor Steven Carlson officiating. Burial will be in Froen Cemetery , Twp. of Red Cedar, Dunn Co. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie and also 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
