William "Bill" Edwards, Sr., age 82, the only child of Russell and Margaret (Laughlin) Edwards, born January 5, 1929 in Neenah, WI, died on December 3, 2011 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire surrounded by his family.

Bill grew up in Marion, WI; Topeka, KS and Wisconsin Rapids, WI. He graduated from Wisconsin Rapids High School and went directly to serving his country in the U.S. Army during WWII and was stationed in Germany. Following discharge from the Army, he attended Central State Teachers College (now UW-Stevens Point) and graduated in 1952 with a Bachelors Degree. Following graduation, he worked as an elementary teacher and or principle in the school districts of Lac du Flambeau, Sugar Camp, Colfax and Colby.

In 1950 Bill married Delores Skowen and together they had four children.

He later changed careers and worked as a district manager for State Farm Insurance Co. in Northern Wisconsin and later as vice president of Great Lakes Insurance Company's of Madison WI office.

In 1968, he and his wife bought The Sport Shop in Menomonie, WI. In 1975, they started the Tainter Lake Bait & Gun on Tainter Lake. Bill retired in 1996 and moved to Menomonie, WI.

Throughout the years, Bill was an active volunteer on community/county committees and clubs including: Past Commander of VFW Post 1039, Life member of VFW, American Legion, Dunn County Fair Board, Menomonie Library Board, Founding Member of Tainter Lake Sportsman Club, Rice Lake Elks Club, and Red cedar Antique Auto Club. He also enjoyed the mornings he spent with his coffee clubs.

Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved trout fishing especially. Hunting always provided him with an excuse to have a dog. Early in life he was very active in showing and training Irish Setters and Labs.

Bill also enjoyed flying and riding his many motorcycles and scooters. Later in life he was very active in restoring and showing his antique cars. He will be forever remembered for his creativity in giving everyone nicknames and making his grandkids feel like they each were his favorite. He loved the time he spent with family, friends and his dogs at his land on the Hay River. He left his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren wonderful memories of target practice, cookouts, floating the river and respecting nature.

Grandchildren; Jason Edwards of Lone Rock, WI, Jennifer (Ryan) Andreae of Montrose, MN, Staci Peterson of Elk Mound, WI, Kariann Peterson of Menomonie, WI, Scott Peterson of Minneapolis, MN, Kara Edwards Husby of Elk Mound, WI, Corbin, Danielle and Aaron Edwards of Menomonie. And 7 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son John.

Bill's wishes were to be cremated and have a visitation which will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Saturday, December 10, 2011 at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie. Memorial services and burial will be at Northern Wisconsin Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Spooner at a later date.
